Great lyrics (poetry)

From Joni Mitchell- 'Jericho'

I'll try to keep myself open up to you
It gets easier and easier to do
Just like Jericho
Let these walls come tumbling down now
Let them fall right on the ground
Let all these dogs go running free
The wild and the gentle dogs
caged in me

and also this line I always loved :}
"Since you've been gone I felt so bad, it's almost like you were still here"

  1. We aren't able to start our own topics, are we?
So I'll just put my inspirations in a reply :)
I could come up with tons and tons more, but I'll just post two ^^

From Blaqk Audio - Wake up, open the door and escape to the sea:

Please catch me now, I'm lying.
You taught me how it can feel like love.
    Just catch your breath.
We'll dive in and our descent
will somehow feel like life goes on.

The next bit always makes me smile, It's from 'You're the only one'by Maria Mena

I hope you can forgive me for that time
When I put my hand between your legs
    And said it was small
Cuz its really not at all
I guess there's just a part of me that likes to bring you down
    Just to keep you around
Cuz the day that you realize how amazing you are
    You're gonna leave me

  2. this is the first sentence of the song morning, by amos lee.

"morning, like a picture without a frame"

i woke up in a small bamboo hut on an island in thailand, stepped outside and watched out over the deep blue sea. i turned my i-pod on and this was what amos lee was singing right on that moment. sounds so cliché 'romantic', huh?! but it's so true!

  4. From Ray LaMontagne "Empty"

She lifts her skirt up to her knees,
walks through the garden rows with her bare feet, laughing.
I never learned to count my blessings,
I choose instead to dwell in my disasters.
I walk on down the hill,
through grass, grown tall and brown
and still its hard somehow to let go of my pain.
On past the busted back of that old and rusted Cadillac
that sinks into this field, collecting rain.
Will I always feel this way?
    So empty, so estranged.

  5. "There is just no time to parade around sulking.
I would rather laugh than cry."

    Bad Religion - Slumber

I really like Bad Religion's lyrics. Every time I am angry or annoyed by something, I think of these lyrics

now this always kicks me. like all of the can's lyrics btw. its based on a poem named "mary, mary, quite contrary"
you should listen to it if you dont know it. the singer sounds so freakin desperate.

  8. Mary, oh Mary, so quite contrary,
    How does your garden grow?
These silver bells and cockle shells
And pretty men all in our room,
    When you see contrary Mary,
Told her eye, refuse to terry.
We spoke very soft and slow
    Without your pretty men, Mary,
    Standing in a row.
    Mary, Mary, Mary, Mary.

    Smoke a high cool cigarette,
Turn around and then we left,
Smiling as the way began to grow,
We got your pretty men all in a row.
    Mary, Mary, so quite contrary,
    How does your garden grow?
These silver bells and cockle shells
And pretty men all in our room,
    Mary, Mary, Mary, Mary,
    Mary, Mary, Mary, Mary,
    Mary, Mary, Mary, Mary,
    Mary, Mary, Mary, Mary.
    When you see contrary Mary,
Told her eye, refuse to terry.
We spoke very soft and slow,
We got your pretty men standing in a row.
Mary, Mary, Mary, Mary, Mary, Mary,
Mary, Mary, Mary, Mary, Mary, Mary,
Mary, Mary, Mary, Mary, Mary, Mary,
Mary, Mary, Mary, Mary, Mary, Mary,
Mary, Mary, Mary, Mary, Mary, Mary,
Mary, Mary, Mary, Mary, Mary, Mary,
Mary, Mary, Mary, Mary, Mary, Mary,
Mary, Mary, Mary, Mary, Mary, Mary.

  9. hier haalde (per liedje beschreven) Bertolf zn inspiratie vandaan. ( This is where Bertolf got his inspiration from),

Ik kom erachter dat ik zelf ook veel schijf over mn eigen leven en de mensen om mij heen.
(I found myself writing a lot about my own life aswell and people who are in it)

misschien doe ik nog inspiratie op van zijn inspiratie :P (maybe i'll get inspiration out of his inspiration:P )

hey didnt see that one. i really like it, when love isnt only expressed through lyrics that are suitable for my grandma. another example would be this one from xiu xiu:

"i'm gonna spank your ass so hard you will hate me
but i'll put two pillows on your dining room chair"

  11. Whaa! I just found my 'Tegan and Sara' cd back *happy*

They've also got some amazing lyrics, like
'I wouldn't like me' (the entire lyric is great, but I'll stick to one verse):

There's a war inside of me
Do I cause new heartbreak to write a new broken song
Do I push it down or let it run me right into the ground
I feel like I wouldn't like me if I met me

The lyrics to 'back in your head' are great too, go look them up now so I won't have to make this a loooong post ;)

  13. To me, this is still the best lyric on this subject.

Brett Dennen has really managed to discribe this 'cliche-ish' subject, 'cause the bottomline of this lyric is really nothing more than 'Without love, the world is really a nasty place to be hanging around for a lifetime'. But I'm also pretty sure that some of you will get a totally diferent massage out this song. Here's a video some dude made together with the song.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RXMqrbi-rSY

    And here's the lyrics:

There ain’t no reason things are this way.
Its how they always been and they intend to stay.
I can't explain why we live this way, we do it everyday.
Preachers on the podium speakin’ of saints in seance,
Prophets on the sidewalk beggin’ for change,
Old ladies laughing from the fire escape, cursing my name.
I got a basket full of lemons and they all taste the same,
A window and a pigeon with a broken wing,
You can spend your whole life workin’ for something
Just to have it taken away.
People walk around pushing back their debts,
Wearing pay checks like necklaces and bracelets,
Talking ‘bout nothing, not thinking ‘bout death,
Every little heartbeat, every little breath.
People walk a tight rope on a razors edge
Carrying their hurt and hatred and weapons.
It could be a bomb or a bullet or a pen
Or a thought or a word or a sentence.

There Ain't no reason things are this way.
It's how they always been and they intend to stay
I don’t know why I say the things I say, but I say them anyway.
But love will come set me free
Love will come set me free,I do believe
Love will come set me free, I know it will
Love will come set me free, yes.

    Prison walls still standing tall,
Some things never change at all.

Keep on buildin’ prisons, gonna fill them all,
Keep on buildin’ bombs, gonna drop them all.
Working your fingers bear to the bone,
Breaking your back, make you sell your soul.
Like a lung that’s filled with coal, suffocatin’ slow.
The wind blows wild and I may move,
The politicians lie and I am not fooled.
You don't need no reason or a three piece suit to argue the truth.
The air on my skin and the world under my toes,
Slavery stitched into the fabric of my clothes,
Chaos and commotion wherever I go, love I try to follow.

Love will come set me free
Love will come set me free, I do believe
Love will come set me free, I know it will
Love will come set me free, yes.

There ain't no reason things are this way
It’s how they always been and they intend to stay
I can't explain why we live this way, we do it everyday.

    Cheers Everybody,

    Joost
